I never received any reply from Katie.

So which is it; Branch Basics has or has not changed their formulation? And did Katie Wells ever answer this refutation of her recommendation?

It is a disaster. I bought the concentrate and applied as directed. Nothing melted off. In fact, after letting it sit for hours, still nothing budged. The worst part is that this is a soap concentrate! I cannot get it out of my oven. The more I wipe and scrub the more the inside is a slick, slimy, bubbly mess. This might have been the worst online recommendation I’ve ever gotten. It’s been hours, buckets of water and cleaning cloths, and the inside is still a soapy mess. I have learned my lesson trying to do better than good old baking soda! Never again.

I love cleaning with baking soda! But I’ve never heard of Branch Basics before, so I’ll check them out to compare 🙂

I will probably be cleaning a dirty industrial oven soon. I am aware of the main risks you mentioned and am always careful to wear full PPE like long gloves, goggles, mask, apron, etc.
Thanks.

Particularly harmful or deadly for birds and toxic to small animsls (dogs and cats). I’m sure if the fumes can harm them we should not be inhaling them either. Stay with the natural cleaners. Keep up the good work Wellness Mama.

For cleaning the oven keep a spray bottle of vinegar and dawn and spray and wipe after using and if there are any caked spots sprinkle baking soda and allow to sit for a few minutes then wipe down.

Magic erasers are made from melamine, a nasty form of plastic. It is not healthy for you. Just an FYI. there is another similar product, that is made from glass…..I use it on my tub; the original tub from my 1945 house. Still working on getting it white again!

When it comes to the oven, however, things are a little bit more specific as various factors play a role, like frequency of usage and maintenance. The grime shouldn’t have a chance to accumulate, otherwise it becomes harder and harder over time to remove the stains.

I put them in the tub on a rag, pour some hot water, just to cover them. I throw in the water 2-3 dish washing machine pods, and 6-7 drying sheets (I only use those sheets for this business). I leave them there for a day. The next day the gunk comes out like flakes. I finish the job in the kitchen sink, where I use a scrub to remove the rest. It comes off easily, only needs a little push. The result is shiny SS racks.

Yes, Stephanie, you can use this on an electric oven.

Yes, use the regular baking soda and it will turn into a paste when combined with the water.

I’m just starting out making my own natural cleaners and have found your blog absolutely amazing. When you state ‘baking soda paste’ do you mean you put powder on it turns into a paste or do you have a paste pre-made? All I’ve ever known of is the powder that you use in baking!!! :-/

Thanks for the great work!

Seeking clarification regarding the process of oven cleaning. In step two, you state “pour on a thick layer of baking soda, especially on the bottom”. What method are you using to apply the baking soda paste to the top and walls of the oven?

I recently bought some razor scrapers from Amazon. I tried this morning one of them and to my surprise it removed the burned sugar/grease like a peel, living the oven floor super clean. I used it under an angle, changing the direction as some spots were easier to remove in a certain direction. I had to keep removing the scraped grime. At least my oven is made of some sort of super hard ceramic like metal. It is very resistant to scratch. I wouldn’t use the scraper on any stainless steel or painted surface, unless you intend to remove the paint. But at least the bottom of the floor got easily cleaned without any other thing, maybe just some water from the moist cloth I used for cleaning the scrapings. I also used the scraper for the door glass widow. It worked very well without any scratching. The scraper is not so good for the walls (they are not straight at all), and weird to use on the top under the grill. The top and walls are not so dirty, and I don’t know yet what to use for cleaning-backing soda or bar tender. My oven has auto clean, but I have a quaker parrot so I try not to use it.
As for the oven racks I use the bathtub with 2-3 dish cleaning pods and 6-7 drying sheets (I only use these for cleaning the 2 racks). Keep the racks in water for more than 4 h and a little scraping is all they need.

I realise this is an old post but I just used a magic eraser on my oven door and was gobsmaked! Ten years I have not been able to see through that oven door (it came with the house) and I gave it a gentle rub in a circular motion and it is like new. I even had witnesses. We just stared at each other in awe. LOL. Rubbed my fingers across it . . . squeaky clean!

After waking up with a migraine and a mostly clean oven, I need to start round #2.

Questions: What can I do to get the nasty cleaner residue out of the oven? Is there anything I can put on the bottom of the oven to prevent future messes that won’t compromise the cooking process?

Thanks, Suzanne
