All seeds, dairy, wheat, nightshade, whey, shellfish, watermelon (latest one, I was so surprised) tree nuts, so today I’ve decided I’ve had enough of looking and feeling like this and playing roulette with myself. Anaphylaxis is increasing. I think my system is so overwhelmed anything is an issue.

So glad I found your page.

I have been fighting Lupus now for 7 years.

As long as its from a healthy, pasture-raised source it should be fine. If you don’t have access to that locally this is a good place to find healthy meats online. https://www.jdoqocy.com/click-7555990-13964763

AIP eliminates nuts and seeds in the initial eating plan, so no flaxseed. https://www.thepaleomom.com/the-whys-behind-the-autoimmune-protocol-nuts-and-seeds/

My family and I are planning to start a gut health journey for a number of reasons but mostly allergies and found your wonderful protocol and research. Our youngest ASD, SPD, apraxia of speech, DD, sensory eating issues, was recently blood tested and has allergies to chicken and turkey among many other things but he is currently somewhat fond of pork tenderloin soooo we wondered if that might be a suitable substitute for chicken and turkey until he has some healing in his gut and can eat chicken and turkey again, two of his favorite foods 🙁 I would be grateful for any suggestions and ideas as once we embark on this protocol/journey.

Make sure you are having your Ferritin level checked, this is the most important test to check for iron. Ferritin must be above 80 at all times for proper iron levels and for thyroid function. It’s the number one cause of Hoshmotis. B12 should be 1000, d3 80. Get all these levels.

Not every diet or every food works for every person. A GAPS practitioner or functional nutritionist should be able to offer personalized advice for your situation.

I loved butternut squash soup and roasted squashes, but now my entire face breaks out when I eat them. How can I stay on this diet? Broccoli and cauliflower is great, but I really want some vegetable variety.

I was drinking this tea and it has been helping with my digestion but this diet says no seed herbs.

That is interesting about not being allergic…. what I have come across in the past is that people with this reaction are not allergic but that they have a deficiency in iodine. The problem is also being deficient in other things like selenium and a few other things. Here is a very good link to some information on this: https://www.misslizzyhealth.com/blogs/iodine-thyroid-health-articles/iodine-hashimotos-treatment
Thank you Katie for all you do here on this great website! All the best health to everyone!

How do they test your antibodies? Is there a specific?

I felt really good doing that. I have an autoimmune disease that many believe low starch to be beneficial for (ankylosing spondylitis) and it is difficult to follow AIP because the diet involves a good amount of starchy veggies and flours. I have not tried the GAPS diet but it seems like it might be a better fit for me overall.

Hi! Thank you so much for this awesome post. I was wondering about coconut products; coconut yogurt, coconut milk, coconut flakes etc… are these ok to eat during an autoimmune diet?

It keeps that richness that real butter has better than coconut oil. Epic makes a few different “use the whole animal” type fats, I think tallow and pork fat- I haven’t tried those, but the duck fat is a great replacement for butter.
