Bioavailability Nutrition: Why Some Supplement Ingredients Are Better Than Others
You may know taking a daily multivitamin-multimineral supplement is important for optimal health and wellbeing, ensuring we get needed nutrients that may be missing from our diets.
But did you know not all supplement ingredients are equal? The nutrients in some supplements are more bioavailable – that is, our bodies can better absorb them – than some others.
Nutrition scientists have found that the conditions in which plants are grown can affect their phytonutrient content and the nutrients’ bioavailability. Phytonutrients are plant nutrients that offer a variety of health benefits.
“It’s not about growing plants under ideal conditions, it’s about growing them under the right conditions for the greatest benefits,” says Steve Missler, PhD, Nutrilite™ principal scientist.
“Our extensive research into plants and nutrition shows that when plants are grown under more stressful conditions, they release more phytonutrients,” adds Don Pusateri, Nutrilite™ senior principal scientist. “When we formulated our new multivitamin/multimineral supplement, we specifically looked for plants with more bioavailable phytonutrients for the greatest benefits.”
Nutrilite™ Double X™ Multivitamin/Multimineral/Phytonutrient supplement contains PhytoProtect™, a unique blend of phytonutrient-rich botanical extracts developed by Amway scientists. The extracts are derived from plants grown on Nutrilite™ certified organic farms or on NutriCert™ certified supplier farms to be more bioavailable.
The blend also includes rosemary from the Atlas Mountains in northwestern Africa, where strong sunlight makes growing conditions more stressful – and gives the rosemary more potent levels of phytonutrients.
“Sourcing plants with greater phytonutrient content greatly affects the nutritional value of the plant itself – and the nutritional value of the end product,” says Missler.
